Over the weekend I met with someone who wanted help with Social Media Strategy for their business.
They’re a start-up company and currently have opportunity to land some BIG name clients.
My advice to them:
“You don’t have the time or the manpower to run a social media campaign right now. You need to focus on earning money from clients you already have and the rest of your energy going after your very promising leads.”
It sounds like extremely counter productive advice from someone whose business involves Social Media Marketing. But, the truth is there are different kinds of marketing. A start-up business cannot get involved in all of them.
This company already has great relationship with the organisations they want business from. It’s taken a long time to build that relationship. Now all they need to do is capitalise on what they’ve built so far.
Approaching individuals for business still works- and if you’re approaching organisations you already have a relationship with for their business it’s that much easier.
Don’t waste time trying to do everything- do what’s working for you and stick to that.
When you’ve made your money then you can afford to explore more marketing avenues.
Start-up businesses often fail because of trying to do too much too soon.
Don’t fall into that trap.
